Liverpool FC were involved in a thrilling 30 penalty shootout this week.
They took the lead against opponents Middlesbrough in the fourth round Capital One Cup clash thanks to Jordan Rossiter’s goal on his debut for the team, but lost the lead thanks to
an Adam Reach header.
Attacking midfielder Suso netted another for the Reds during extra time, but a last-gasp penalty from Patrick Bamford led the game to a shootout.
That was when the drama unfolded before the Kop end of Anfield stadium. Penalty hero Bamford had his shot saved by Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet , but Raheem Sterling missed the fifth penalty, sending the game into sudden death.
Amazingly, the following 20 penalties hit the back of the net, including the ones taken by both goalkeepers. Even though this is a testament to the elite training that each player goes through, only one team could emerge as the victor. Winger Albert Adomah shot wide, leaving the score at 14-13. Middlesbrough were devastated, having coming within reaching distance of their first win at Anfield since 1976.
The shootout for a Football League trophy equaled the one set in 2011 between Dagenham & Redbridge and Leyton Orient.
